A once-tired row of shops on Reepham Road has been given a new lease of life, thanks to recent investment and the arrival of several new businesses.
For years, this parade of independent shops has been a familiar part of the Hellesdon community, home to much-loved local names such as Cut Loose Hair Designs, run by Beverley Lewis for over 37 years. But in recent times, several long-standing businesses closed due to retirement, leaving empty units and a sense that the area had lost some of its buzz.
“Due to retirements the last few years have seen a decline”
That’s now changed. With backing from the landlords, the row has been transformed, with all empty shops now filled and thriving. Renovation work has also been carried out on the warehouse units behind the shops, bringing in new life and a renewed sense of purpose to the whole area.
“We now have a full line-up of shops with three new businesses”
“I’ve run the hairdressers for 37 years,” says Beverley Lewis. “The row of shops there were busy for years with mainly the same shops, but due to retirements the last few years have seen a decline with empty shops and everything looking dreary. Thankfully, due to our landlords spending some money, we now have a full line-up of shops with three new businesses, and all the units at the back have had a makeover.”
Shoppers can now enjoy a wide range of local services and treats, including:
M&M Sweet Treats Café, offering delicious cakes, savouries, and a newly opened garden area.
Cut Loose Hair Designs, catering for all the family’s hairdressing needs.
Suttons Toys, formerly at Anglia Square, now bringing joy to children in Hellesdon.
Toombs Butchers, renowned for quality meat.
Mervin’s Convenience Store, open from early until late, stocking everyday essentials.
It’s My Party, the go-to destination for party supplies and celebration goods.
Romino’s, serving fish and chips, burgers, kebabs and pizzas.
Chung Hing, a popular Chinese takeaway.
Just behind the shops you’ll also find Chandler & Skitmore Fitted Carpets, R. Dunn Building Contractors, and an exciting new furniture outlet, set to open soon.
With plenty of off-road parking and a full complement of businesses once again, the Reepham Road parade is a great example of how a little investment and community spirit can breathe new life into a local high street. As Beverley puts it, “It’s so important these days to support your local businesses.”
