Pupils from Costessey Primary School have completed a remarkable 1,186 miles as part of the Mini London Marathon 2025.
Every child, from Nursery to Year 6, took part in the initiative, making it a memorable whole-school effort. As well as running, pupils learned about the history and impact of the London Marathon. Staff brought in medals and photos from past events to inspire the children, while pupils proudly shared their own medals—or those of family members—with classmates.
“I didn’t think I could do it, but I did!”
During PE sessions, each child walked, jogged or ran two miles, contributing to the collective total of 1,186 miles—the equivalent of 4,744 laps around the school field. The event was about more than just physical achievement; it fostered joy, teamwork and resilience. Some pupils showcased their running skills, while others enjoyed walking with friends, often singing, dancing, and linking arms as they went.
Many children overcame personal doubts to complete the challenge, with some running their longest distance yet. “I didn’t think I could do it, but I did!” was a phrase heard again and again around the field.
The experience left a lasting impact, with pupils expressing excitement for the future. Year 2’s Aria said, “I’m going to do a marathon when I’m older!”, while Poppy in Year 5 added, “I’m going to keep my mini marathon race bib for my memory box.”
Costessey Primary is now preparing to send off its final results to the official Mini London Marathon organisers and looks forward to receiving a school marathon trophy in recognition of the children’s outstanding achievement.
The event has boosted physical activity across the school and left pupils with memories, motivation, and a renewed sense of pride. The school hopes to make the Mini Marathon a regular tradition for years to come.
